Los Angeles Youth to Team Up with Secretary of State Alex Padilla, LAUSD, SEIU to Launch Voter Registration Drive

Message to Youth: Embrace Your Power

Los Angeles –  Youth leaders of Children Over Politics will be joined by Secretary of State Alex Padilla, Los Angeles Unified School District officials and members of the Service Employees International Union to launch a drive to register LAUSD students to vote in time for the 2016 elections.  Organizers say the youth vote can be a decisive margin of victory.

Children Over Politics is a group of youth leaders who formed in response to the unaccompanied immigrant minors fleeing from violence in Central America.  They are launching a plan to register thousands of young voters who can be pivotal in shaping elections at the local, state and federal levels.  Youth leaders say they believe their peers will be motivated to vote in response to:

  • Unprecedented deportations of immigrant families and divisive language aimed at immigrants by political candidates and their supporters
  • The skyrocketing cost of college education and student debt
  • Widespread poverty
  • Exploitation of low-wage workers
