Sacramento, CA – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California released the following statement today after the Assembly passed AB 2079 (Calderon) on a 43-25 vote. The bill will require nursing home staffing levels to meet or exceed federal recommendations that save lives and prevent injuries to patients and staff:
Laphonza Butler, President of SEIU California and SEIU Local 2015, said:
“Today California’s Assembly took an important step to ensure that nursing homes deliver the quality of care our elders and people with disabilities deserve. California’s nursing assistants are proud to work with Assemblymember Ian Calderon to champion AB 2079 because understaffing of nursing homes prevents them from doing their jobs, and causes injuries to residents and to staff.
“This bill will ensure that California’s recent increases in nursing home payments result in actual improvements to quality care. Safe staffing saves lives and prevents injuries.”
