SEIU California Lauds New Law to End Surprise Medical Bills That Bankrupt Families

Sacramento, CA – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California released the following statement from Laphonza Butler, President of SEIU California and SEIU Local 2015, today after Governor Jerry Brown signed AB 72 (Bonta). AB 72 protects patients from “surprise bills” when they receive care from in-network providers.

“SEIU members proudly stood side-by-side with patient advocates to move AB 72 to Governor Brown’s desk, and we are pleased his signature will enact the strongest protections for healthcare consumers facing surprise medical bills in the nation, ending the confusion and financial hardship among workers who have experienced going to an in-network provider covered by their insurance and still getting stuck holding the bill. Surprise medical bills can strike families when they least expect it and can least afford it, and deliver financial ruin even to people who’ve followed the rules and selected care providers in their networks. This bill protects patients from bills they don’t deserve and can’t afford.”
