Historic Federal Court Hearing on Trump Order to De-Fund Sanctuary Cities brings Immigrant Advocates, Labor together for Media Availability Ahead of Friday’s Court Hearing

MEDIA ALERT FOR FRIDAY @ 7:30AM IN SAN FRANCISCO

San Francisco and Santa Clara Counties’ Challenge to Trump First in the Nation to be Heard in Federal Court

San Francisco — A broad coalition of immigrants’ rights organizations, workers, community organizations, civil rights organizations and legal service providers from San Francisco and Santa Clara counties will rally in solidarity around efforts to block President Trump’s executive order targeting sanctuary cities. Signed in January, the order would withhold federal funding from cities, counties and states that have welcoming policies toward immigrants and refuse local cooperation with Trump’s deportation machine. Legal advocates say Trump’s order is unconstitutional because it would defund vital local services that have nothing to do with immigration enforcement.

Policies that keep city and county workers, including law enforcement, out of the business of deportations are crucial to providing public services, upholding due process, and protecting local families and communities in almost every major city in America.

Last month, workers who are represented by SEIU and immigrant and civil rights organizations filed amicus briefs in support of the San Francisco and Santa Clara lawsuits, focusing on the harm that Trump’s Executive Order is already doing to local services and the residents who count on them.
