Sacramento, CA – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California released the following statement from Max Arias, Executive Director SEIU Local 99, on the passage of AB 621(Bocanegra):

“The Assembly’s support of AB 621 is welcome news for the thousands of critical school staff – from bus drivers to food service workers — who are heading into the summer unsure whether they will be able to pay their rent and feed their families. While students are looking forward to summer break, school workers face a stressful period of deep poverty: they collect cans, line up at food banks, and attempt to find temporary employment.

“The Classified Employee Summer Bridge Fund means dignity for classified workers who are crucial to students’ educational experience, yet suffer the injustice of exclusion from unemployment insurance. The voluntary, partially self-funded account will allow classified employees to contribute a small portion of their paycheck that will be matched 2:1 by the state, a step toward ending the ‘cruel summer’ our school staff face each year.”
