SEIU California Applauds Senate Committee Passage of Summer Bridge Fund for Classified Workers

Sacramento, CA – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California released the following statement from Max Arias, Executive Director, SEIU Local 99, on the Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee passage of AB 621(Bocanegra):

“Today’s vote in support of AB 621 is encouraging to the thousands of dedicated school staff who keep our children safe, healthy, and learning during the school year, yet who are barely scraping by as the summer drags on. As they wait to return to school this fall, they look for scarce short-term jobs, line up at food banks, and struggle to pay the rent as they go without pay and are unfairly excluded from the state’s unemployment program.

“The Classified Employee Summer Bridge Fund gives workers an opportunity to save for the summer, with a 2:1 match by the state. Classified school staff earn far too little to support a family in most parts of the state, so the Summer Bridge is a significant boost to families living on the brink of poverty.

“California communities count on our bus drivers, food service workers, custodians, and teacher’s aides to create a safe and supportive learning environment for our children. We must not let these essential and dedicated school workers go forgotten in the summer months. AB 621 now deserves support from the full Senate and Governor Brown.”
