Sacramento, CA – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California released the following statement from Roxanne Sanchez, President, SEIU Local 1021, on the California State Senate Governance and Finance Committee passing AB 1250 (Jones-Sawyer):
“California took a step forward today toward establishing good government practices for counties when they outsource public services to private contractors.
“From foster care management, to substance abuse treatment, to inmate healthcare, counties spend billions of taxpayer dollars every year on private contracts, but unlike the state and school districts, there are no standards for these contracts, no requirements that they achieve savings or maintain the quality of services. This is unacceptable.
“Counties have fiercely resisted accountability, but in the end, taxpayers and the public will benefit when counties no longer have a blank check when it comes to private contracts.”
