SEIU California Applauds Senate Judiciary Committee for Passage of Bill to Protect Workers, Families Targeted by Indiscriminate Worksite Raids

Sacramento, CA – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California released the following statement from Edith Portillo, a janitor from Los Angeles and a member of SEIU-USWW, on the passage of AB 450 (Chiu) out of the Senate Judiciary Committee today:

“Living in daily fear that ICE will show up at your workplace or home is no way for any person to live. By working to make AB 450 (Chiu) become law, we are taking a powerful stand that in California we believe all people should have the right to safety, fairness, and dignity in the workplace.

“AB 450 is good for my friends, family and our community who would suffer devastating losses if ICE showed up at our workplaces and ripped apart our families. As an immigrant worker, I contribute to my employer’s success and our state’s economy. Even as we face terrible hostility toward immigrants fueled by the Trump administration, workers like me are simply seeking a better life for our families in the country we call our home.”
