SEIU Members Applaud Herstory in the Making: Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins Sworn In Today

Sacramento, CA – After Senator Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) was sworn in as Senate President pro Tempore, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California released the following statement from SEIU Local 221 President David Garcias:

“SEIU members warmly welcome Senator Toni Atkins to the Senate’s top leadership post, and applaud California’s Democratic Senators for again making history and advancing justice and equality with their selection of the first woman and openly LGBT senator to serve our state in this powerful role.

“Pro Tem Atkins has demonstrated an unwavering commitment throughout her career in public service to empowering people, supporting working families, and ensuring that no one is forgotten or left behind. She is the right leader during these challenging times for California’s communities, and she will help our state confront the federal attacks on health care, home care, housing, immigrant rights, worker rights, and equality with courage and conviction.

“SEIU members are deeply grateful to Pro Tem Kevin de León for his service in the Senate’s top position and his partnership in advancing crucial rights and protections for workers, immigrants, students and others pursuing the California Dream. We look forward to working with Pro Tem Atkins to advance our shared vision of justice.”
