SEIU California Members Deliver Victories for Pro-Worker Candidates, Vision of Inclusion And Justice For California

De León, Newsom, Hernandez, Becerra, Padilla, Ma, Yee,
Thurmond, Lara Secure Positions in November General Election

Sacramento, CA – By the time the polls closed Tuesday on California’s primary election, members of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) unions in California had delivered support for pro-worker candidates with tens of thousands of phone calls, thousands of doors knocked, and a robust campaign of TV, radio, and digital advertising. SEIU members’ endorsements mattered: Kevin de León (US Senate), Gavin Newsom (Governor), Ed Hernandez (Lt. Governor), Xavier Becerra (Attorney General), Alex Padilla (Secretary of State), Fiona Ma (Treasurer), Betty Yee (Controller), Tony Thurmond (Superintendent of Public Instruction) and Ricardo Lara (Insurance Commissioner) all secured positions in the November general election.

Roxanne Sanchez, President of SEIU California and SEIU Local 1021 said:

“SEIU members showed up with energy, heart and determination in this primary and demonstrated why their endorsements and support of candidates make a difference. In helping secure wins for our flag-bearers Gavin Newsom and Kevin de León and our slate of pro-worker candidates, SEIU members have lifted up a team of strong leaders who value workers’ voices and know we must have a seat at the table to strengthen our state.

“With Trump’s attacks on our healthcare, our immigrant communities, our black brothers and sisters, our students and our very rights as workers, SEIU members are more determined than ever to elect candidates that share our passion for justice and our determination to create opportunity for the next generation. Today, we’ve demonstrated that workers’ voices matter, and that our inclusive vision of California endures. We won’t let up until we’ve made 2018 one for the history books.”
