Don't Cut Developmental Disabilities Programs!

The first Developmental Disability Industry lobby day for 2008 was a huge success! The event began the day before with an Industry Council meeting then on Monday our members turned out in record numbers and hit the capitol ready to fight!DD Lobby Day April 7
SEIU Members from Public Sector Locals including Locals 521, 721 and 1021, met and lobbied at the capitol on Monday, April 7th to protest proposed budget cuts and promote AB 2635 (Beall) - State Employment Opportunities for People with Developmental Disabilities.  40 members attended, and we visited 17 legislators on three committees: Assembly PERSS, Assembly Budget Sub-committee 1, and Senate Budget Sub-Committee 3.

Our message was clear to Legislators, Don’t cut programs that provide dignity & support for the developmentally disabled & their families!

Members felt positive about telling their stories to legislators about working with people with Handshakedevelopmental disabilities.  In one member’s story, she talked about the importance of her work as a job coach helping people with autism, and what it would mean for them if positions like hers were cut out of the budget.  Instead of working and putting money back into the state through taxes, those consumers would become dependent on the state, costing more money through the programs they would be forced to Interviewrely on for their care.  She talked about one consumer in particular who she helped through his job at a 7-11 cleaning the store and outside areas, giving specialized training such as making sure he knew not to go out into the parking lot in front of moving cars.  Many things most people would take for granted, but for consumers mean the difference between dignity and dependence.

Members received educational materials to take back to facilities to recruit more co-workers to attend the next Lobby Day scheduled for April 23rd.  During this Lobby Day event, SEIU members have an opportunity to testify at the senate budget subcommittee, as well as, lobby all Legislators in the Senate and Assembly on the budget and the DD Organizing Bill.

Linda Dent
For me, equality is a bedrock value, and that’s why I’m voting against Prop. 8. I believe equality for all is the best guide we have in our nation’s long struggle to fulfill its promise. As soon as I hear someone say that someone else doesn’t deserve the same treatment and rights that everyone else enjoys, alarm bells go off.
”I’m a person of faith, and my faith is based on love. Some religious folks are saying to vote yes on 8 for religious reasons, but I believe that God loves all of his children equally and wants us to do the same.
”Whatever your beliefs are, keep them – but don’t use them as your excuse to take away another person’s rights and stand in the way of their equality.
