SEIU CA Workers Head into General Election Ready to Rebuild California

Thursday, June 10, 2010

(Sacramento, CA) – Bill A. Lloyd, President of the Services Employees International Union (SEIU) California released the following statement on California’s primary election results:

“In 147 days Californians will go to the polls to decide the future of our state for years to come and SEIU members will spend every one of those days working our hearts out to elect a governor and a team of leaders that will help us rebuild California.

“With a $20 billion budget deficit and high unemployment, California can’t afford the Whitman plan of mass layoffs, tax breaks for the rich and anti-immigrant policies that will downsize, corporatize and divide us as a State.

“While Meg Whitman will be spending tens of millions of dollars to cover up her record of collusion with the same banks and brokers that wrecked our economy, we’ll be engaging millions of voters to expose the truth about her ties to Wall Street.

“While Meg is gobbling up the airwaves on her crusade to scapegoat hard-working public employees and immigrants for the damage Wall Street did to our families, we will be making millions of phone calls and knocking on hundreds of thousands of doors to spread the word about her lengthy record of layoffs and her anti-worker, anti-immigrant agenda.

“With our state’s economy in tatters, and our safety net nearly shredded to pieces, our next Governor must have a strong commitment to reinvest in education, in health care, in home care and the quality services that make California strong.  In critical times, we need proven leaders.  Jerry Brown has been a fighter for California’s working families.  He will hold the Wall Street banks and corporations accountable for the damage they’ve done to California and he’ll work alongside us to rebuild California.”

We believe that by working together we can build a California where working families can thrive again.
