Assembly, Senate Budget Plans Show Paths for Rebuilding California

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

(SACRAMENTO) – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California, representing over 700,000 workers, released the following statement from President Bill A. Lloyd on budget proposals released this week from Assembly and Senate Democrats:

“The budget blueprints released today by Speaker Perez and yesterday by Senate pro Tempore Steinberg show the vision and leadership we need to protect and create jobs and begin rebuilding California.

“By protecting hundreds of thousands of jobs and investing in education and services that will drive California’s recovery, these plans will put California on a path to a more prosperous future for our children and grandchildren.

“These sensible alternatives to a cuts-only budget that would hurt our families and our economy recognize that California’s families have already sacrificed too deeply.   There is now broad agreement that it is time to come together and end the sweetheart deals oil companies and other corporations have walked away with budget after budget.

“The budget frameworks offered by the Speaker and the Pro Tem demonstrate that when our leaders engage Californians in our budget process, we can build the momentum we need to protect and create jobs and rebuild California stronger than ever.”

SEIU California is a coalition of over 700,000 janitors, social workers, security officers, home care workers, school and university employees, healthcare workers, and city, county and state employees represented by SEIU local unions throughout California. We come together to build a better California by fighting to pass policies and elect candidates that benefit working families and advance the issues we care about: affordable healthcare, good wages, retirement security for all, a healthy environment, good schools and universities, and stronger communities. We believe that by working together we can build a California where working families can thrive again.
